Chinese and family focused

At Chua Tan Associates, we understand the complexities and sensitivities that often arise from disputes involving Asians and Chinese-speaking communicators. Our mediation services are specifically geared towards effectively addressing these unique cultural and linguistic aspects, providing a supportive and constructive environment for conflict resolution.

Cultural sensitivity

Our team consists of experienced mediators who are well versed in Asian cultures and customs. We recognize the importance of cultural sensitivity in mediation and strive to create an atmosphere where all parties feel respected and understood. In addition, our mediators have grown up or lived in Australia for a significant period of time, which allows disputes involving Australians and Asian Australians to be dealt with in a more culturally sensitive manner.

Bilingual mediation

Proficiency in both English and Chinese is essential in mediations involving Chinese language communication. Our bilingual mediators ensure clear and accurate interpretation, facilitate smooth dialogue and nurture mutual understanding.

Customised solutions

Every dispute is unique, and we believe in customising our approach to the specific needs and preferences of each participant. Our mediators work with all stakeholders to explore creative solutions that address underlying interests and concerns.

Proficient in Chinese and family matters

Frequently Asked Questions

What is mediation?

Mediation is a voluntary, confidential process where a neutral third party (me) facilitates constructive discussions between people in conflict — helping them reach a mutually acceptable agreement.

How much does it cost?

My mediation fee is charged by the hour. You are only charged for the time used, and sessions can be renewed by the hour as needed.

Do I need a lawyer to attend?

No, but legal advice before or after mediation can be helpful. As the mediator, I do not represent either party — I remain neutral and focused on guiding the parties through the process.

How long does mediation take?

Many matters are resolved within 2–4 hours, though complex disputes may require multiple sessions.

What is the mediation process?

I will sit the parties together in an online video conference call and we will discuss matters together and go into separate online meeting rooms when the parties have reached a roadblock that is hindering settlement discussions. We will focus on the underlying issues and may involve discussion of underlying assumptions, feelings and concerns as well as reviewing documents, financial statements, photos and other forms of evidence which are central to the dispute. If the parties reach agreement, I will draft settlement terms in a simple document which can then be taken to an independent lawyer to make legally binding. The entire mediation is confidential and I do not keep notes.

Is it legally binding?

Agreements reached in mediation can be formalised into legally binding documents, often with the assistance of each party’s lawyer.
