See <a href=\"\/en\/sons-daughters-inheritance-tradition\/\">sons, daughters and inheritance tradition<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Unspoken arrangements.<\/strong> A child who cared for a parent, worked for the business or lived in the family home may believe there was a promise. Others may not know about it. See <a href=\"\/en\/carer-child-estate-claim\/\">the caring child and estate claims<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Migration.<\/strong> Families spread across countries communicate less often, and assumptions harden.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Blended families and second relationships.<\/strong> New partners and half-siblings bring new interests. Silence and patience often reveal more than questions.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Family meetings with a neutral facilitator.<\/strong> A structured conversation, with an adviser who speaks the family&#8217;s languages and understands its culture, can surface concerns safely.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Explaining the reasons.<\/strong> Where a parent treats children differently, an explanation, in the will or a separate statement, reduces the risk of challenge.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Respecting tradition while adapting to the law.<\/strong> Australian law gives eligible family members rights regardless of tradition. Plans that reflect the family&#8217;s values but are realistic about the law are more durable.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Mediation when needed.<\/strong> If disagreement arises, early mediation preserves both relationships and privacy.
