The Australian Government’s Working Holiday Maker program has seen a large number of people, predominantly from Europe and Asia, come to Australia to live and work. With similar visa programs in place throughout Europe, Asia and North America, large numbers of people in their 20s have decided to go on an adventure around the world, exploring different cultures whilst earning an income. In this respect, there has been a push to get these workers into the much needed intensive labour industries around food production, given that traditional farming is still common for many produce and food products. Similarly, for Working Holiday Makers stuck in Australia due to the COVID-19 restrictions, there now sits in limbo thousands of visa holders on temporary visas who are unable to ascertain their future in Australia beyond the pandemic. Unfortunately, working holiday visa holders cannot extend their visa, but can apply for another working holiday visa if you have worked in regional Australia for the specified period of time in specific industries including plant and animal cultivation, fishing and pearling, tree farming and felling, mining, construction and bushfire recovery work. In this respect, specific benefits apply for those working in Northern Australia. Moreover, there are now exceptions to Working Holiday Makers working in critical sectors, so that they can also remain with the same employer after the six month work duration has completed, especially where the work continues in different locations and you do not work in one given location for more than six months, you work in the agricultural sector or in Northern Australia.
