What is the role of a notary public in Australia?

A notary public in Australia is a lawyer who has years of experience and who has completed further qualifications to become a public notary. They are authorised to authenticate documents for use in countries outside of Australia. A notary public will witness your signature on the document, verify your identity and certify true copies of documents to be used overseas. Each notary public's signature can be endorsed by the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFAT) which is located at the Melbourne Passport Office. The document can then be submitted to embassies or consulates for further legalisation or sent directly overseas if they are part of the Apostille Convention.
