Townhouse, apartment and subdivision projects are a common investment for Chinese and Asian families and developers in Melbourne. Chua Tan Associates acts for developers, investors and joint venture partners on Victorian property development, in English and Mandarin.

Joint ventures and funding

Many developments are funded by family members, friends or overseas investors. We document joint venture, co-investment and loan arrangements so that contributions, decision-making, profit shares and exits are clear from the start.

Site acquisition

We act on the purchase of development sites in Victoria, including due diligence on title, planning, easements and contract conditions.

Selling the project

We prepare contracts for off-the-plan and completed sales, and advise on vendor obligations to buyers.

Finance and security

We work with mortgage brokers and lenders on construction, bridging and private finance, including security documents and independent legal advice for borrowers.

Overseas investors

Foreign investment rules can affect who may buy land and how a project is structured. These should be checked before signing.

Frequently asked questions

We're developing with relatives. Do we need a formal agreement?

Yes. Family developments are where disputes are most painful. A written agreement protects both the project and the relationships.

Do you act on developments outside Victoria?

Our property work is Victoria only. We can assist with joint venture and funding agreements for projects elsewhere and coordinate with local lawyers.
