It can be frustrating having performed work or provided goods to someone and then being unable to obtain payment from them. In this respect, we list some important strategies to ensure payment:

1. Know who you are dealing with.

With business, trust is built up over time. Similarly, businesses build up reputations over time based on their provision of goods or services and their ability to uphold their end of the bargain. Therefore, it is important for you to understand the people you will be dealing with as significant losses can result from failure to conduct due diligence on your business partners.

2. Understand that business is mutually beneficial

We often come across stories, particularly involving supply and manufacturing contracts, where the goods delivered are of poor quality or payment has not been received. This leaves clients frustrated and wondering what they can do to resolve the issue. It is important to understand what the average profit margins are for your contractor’s industry and whether the prices or goods provided are able to provide the other party a decent margin. Failure to do so will see the other party cutting corners or failing to pay if the price is deemed to be too high. In this respect, people will always readily pay for a bargain, but they will be reluctant when they feel it is expensive. This ties in with knowing who you are dealing with, as you need to understand the industry of the businesses around you.
