When criminal offending impacts your visa

All temporary and permanent visa holders, in other words those without Australian citizenship, should be very careful about getting into trouble with the police and the law. The Department of Home Affairs may cancel your visa on character grounds if you are found to have committed a criminal offence or behave in a way which is not agreeable to Australian society. In this respect, the Department may even cancel a visa if you have been charged but found not guilty. However, it is not the end of the world if you get into trouble so long as you take actions to avoid getting into trouble again and show a positive contribution to Australian society. Most importantly, when it comes to your criminal law matter, it is essential you speak with someone who has experience with both criminal law and its migration law implications. At Chua Tan Associates, we have experienced lawyers who are highly knowledgeable about both criminal and immigration law. If you have an issue that you are involved in, speak with one of our lawyers for confidential advice.
